Bird Watching : A Continuing Series

Having bought the excellent ‘Penguin by Design : A Cover Story 1935 – 2005’ by Phil Baines some time ago I thought that it was about time that I added his equally good sister publication ‘Puffin By Design : 70 Years of Imagination 1940 – 2010’ to the collection. As with his Penguin book it’s beautifully put together and full of reproductions of the many “treasured and iconic covers” of books published by Puffin in their first seventy years.

My own collection of Puffin Books, mainly the early Puffin Picture Books from the 1940s and 50s, is sadly pretty limited – it’s not often that I find an elderly Puffin out in the wild. One that I do have though is ‘Village and Town’, illustrated by S R Badmin whose ‘Trees In Britian’ was described in the 1962 Penrose Annual as “one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the century”.

Stanley Roy Badmin also worked on the famous Shell Guides series published in the 1950s, produced work for London Transport and British Railways and rather pleasingly, for someone who likes to make the connections, also illustrated Ladybird’s book on Trees published in 1963.

NB. The sound quality isn’t great but there’s film of Phil Baines speaking on ‘Puffin by Design’ at the Innovation Centre at Central St Martins a couple of years ago over here. Well worth a look.
