Book Of The Week
Never judging a book by its cover is plainly the stance of a literary purist. I always judge books by their cover. And I’m right to do so. And in case you need any supporting evidence take a look at the new range of Virago Modern Classics celebrating Virago’s 30th year in business. My favouirtes are the covers for “The Diary Of A Provincial Lady” by E M Delafield designed by Cath Kidtson, “Excellent Women” by Barbabra Pym designed by Orla Kiely and “Valley Of The Dolls” by Jacqueline Susann designed by Barbara Hulanicki – founder, of course, of Biba. Thankfully the decision regarding which to buy is currently out of my hands as I’m brassic (and already have a stack of books in the ‘to read’ pile), that said there’s an excellent little catalogue of the books available in the set which you (like me) can get your hands on for nothing from Waterstones – or you can access a rather haphazard pdf here.
